In response to the surge in foreclosure cases in recent years, the Circuit Court of Cook County launched a new Mortgage Foreclosure Mediation Program in April to help Cook County homeowners facing foreclosure. The program will provide free housing counseling and legal services to Cook County homeowners and families in foreclosure, and is designed to help homeowners resolve their mortgage cases in the most timely and dignified manner possible. Fat Tuesday Challenge, Partnership with Association of Legal Administrators Mark Important Milestone

Over $400,000 Raised for Legal Aid Over the Event’s First Ten Years

This year marked the 10-year anniversary of the Fat Tuesday Challenge, an event co-hosted by the Greater Chicago Chapter of The Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) and The Chicago Bar Foundation’s (CBF) Young Professionals Board. Over 400 members of Chicago’s legal community came out on February 16th to enjoy a spirited evening of fun and relaxation. Proceeds from the event will help more low-income and disadvantaged people access the legal help they need and advance the CBF’s comprehensive efforts to build the capacity of our pro bono and legal aid system. As the Chair of the 4th Annual CBF Investing in Justice Campaign, I am writing to invite you to join me and The Chicago Bar Foundation in a vital cause for our profession and our community. As we embark on the 2010 Campaign this March, the need for pro bono and legal aid services in our community is greater than ever. It’s a critical challenge that we as lawyers have a particular responsibility to meet, and if we don’t step up now, that challenge won’t be met. $50,000 Fellowships for Five Legal Aid Attorneys

On October 19, 2009, the CBF presented the 2009 CBF Sun-Times Public Interest Law Fellowships to five attorneys who have dedicated their careers to legal aid. A Growing Force for Equal Access to Justice in Our Community

As we finish our 60th anniversary year at The Chicago Bar Foundation, CBA members have much to be proud of in the work of their foundation. Former CBF Board President Tom Morsch wrote an excellent history of the CBF’s first fifty years in the CBA’s 125th Anniversary publication in 1998, and the CBF has continued to build on those earlier successes to be an even greater force for good today. Read more. .

An Innovative New Approach

Training & Professional Development in Legal Aid

The Chicago Bar Foundation recently launched an innovative new pro bono program, the CBF Legal Aid Academy, to improve training and professional development opportunities for our community’s legal aid attorneys and staff. Vital training and development opportunities traditionally have not been widely available to legal aid attorneys and staff due to the overstretched budgets that are typical for most pro bono and legal aid organizations.   Read more. . .
