Once every three years, The Chicago Bar Foundation (CBF) awards an incoming law school student the Walter H. Moses Sr. and Walter H. Moses Jr. Scholarship, through the generosity of Eleanor Moses.  Mrs. Moses established the fund in 1975, two years after the death of her husband, a leading and highly respected member of the Chicago Bar. Later that same year her son passed away, and Mrs. Moses began making gifts to the fund in honor of both her late husband and late son. Mrs. Moses, now deceased, created a fund that continues to honor the Moses family and helps alleviate the tremendous financial burdens of law school for individual students.

The Moses Scholarship is intended to support an individual who is deeply committed to public interest work so that upon graduation the individual will be best prepared to pursue a public interest legal career.  The Scholarship provides funds for public interest-minded students so they may complete law school with as little debt burden as possible. 

The Scholarship is awarded for a consecutive three year period to one of the six Chicago area law schools by rotation (Chicago-Kent College of Law, DePaul University College of Law, The John Marshall Law School, Loyola University Chicago School of Law, Northwestern University School of Law, and University of Chicago Law School). These funds enable an incoming full-time public interest law studentto have a significant portion of his or her tuition covered by scholarship funding through CBF. Contingent on the recipient’s continued compliance with the terms of the Scholarship, the student will receive $10,000 in the first year, $15,000 in the second year, and $20,000 in the third year of law school.
