Investing in Justice Campaign Raised Record $1.1 Million for Legal Aid Services

The Chicago Bar Foundation exceeded the previous record during its fourth annual Investing in Justice Campaign thanks to the generous support of Chicago’s legal community this Spring. The Campaign raised an extraordinary $1.1 million for pro bono and legal aid at a time when the demand for such services is rising and other sources of critical funding have been cut. Circuit Court of Cook County Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans today announced the launch of the Cook County Mortgage Foreclosure Mediation Program, which will provide free housing counseling and legal services to Cook County homeowners and families in foreclosure. 4th Annual YLS Texas Hold ‘Em Benefit Sets New Records

Record number of players at annual CBA Young Lawyers Section benefit nets more than $23,000 for The Chicago Bar Foundation

A new record of 145 players and a number of other poker fans turned out for the 4th Annual YLS Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament. Organized by the CBA Young Lawyers Section for the benefit of the CBF, the event once again was a big success and set new records for both the number of players in the tournament and the net proceeds raised.   Read More...

 

Chicago Bar Foundation Awards $200,000 in Grants

Grants will help disadvantaged and low-income Chicagoans gain access to the legal help they need.

The Chicago Bar Foundation recently awarded $200,000 in grants to support 14 different projects that are focused on helping some of the most vulnerable people in our community gain access to our justice system.

The CBF awarded these grants through the Advancing Justice grant program, a grantmaking partnership with the Chicago Area Foundation for Legal Services (CAFLS), an affiliate of The Chicago Community Trust. Advancing Justice grants address systemic barriers to access to justice and/or tackle gaps in the legal aid delivery system. Read more...

 

CBF Receives $100,000 Gift to Support Court-Based Efforts that Help People Facing Foreclosure

Attorneys’ Title Guaranty Fund (ATG) and two local law firms, Pierce and Associates and Codilis & Associates, recently made donations to The Chicago Bar Foundation (CBF) totaling $100,000 to support several pro bono and legal aid organizations that are working with the courts to help the growing number of people facing foreclosure. Chicago Bar Foundation Sun-Times Fellowships Awarded

    Nonprofits Launch New Campaign to Boost Illinois Census Results

    Illinois Foundations’ Project Represents Nation’s Largest Philanthropic Effort to Target Hard-to-Count Populations, Increase State’s Share of Federal Funds

    Chicago, IL –Aiming to overcome hurdles that could depress Illinois census tallies and cost our state deserved federal funds, an unprecedented alliance of 60 nonprofits and 10 of Illinois’ leading foundations are working together to improve participation in the 2010 census among hard-to-count populations. Targeting hard-to-reach communities, this endeavor, known as the Count Me In campaign, is the largest effort in the country to promote census participation in a single state by a group of philanthropic funders and nonprofit organizations.     Governor Quinn Signs Law That Will Help Dedicated Lawyers Serve Vulnerable Illinoisians

    The Public Interest Attorney Assistance Act will help key public service offices in our State by providing a framework for much-needed loan repayment assistance to attorneys who commit to working in the public interest.

    Earlier this week, Governor Quinn took an important step towards access to justice for all by signing Senate Bill 266, the Public Interest Attorney Assistance Act (PIAAA), into law (Public Act 96-0615).  This law will help ensure that vulnerable residents in our State have committed and capable legal representation to protect their rights by creating a framework for a state loan repayment assistance program for lawyers working in the public interest.
